According to the 2010 Census, the Haitian Community is the largest growing population in South Florida.  The Haitian American Vote is reaching nearly 70,000 in Palm Beach County. Candidates on both sides of the isle are now paying more attention to the Haitian community. The value of the Haitian American Vote is very critical, especially in the state of Florida that has one of the largest Haitian American communities in the United States. This year is a big election year. The primary elections will be on August 30th and the general elections on November 7th. The Haitian American Vote will play a major role in these upcoming elections.

Susan Bucher, the  Supervisor of Elections in Palm Beach County, would like to make sure that everyone goes out to vote. In addition, she would like to make sure that every vote counts. Hence, she sits down for an interview with Salusa Basquin. Salusa is one of the most recognizable figures and popular radio personalities in the Haitian Community. Susan provides the most important information voters need know as they prepare to vote in the in August and the November elections. The Haitian  American vote is Salusa Basquin’s main concern.

“The very first step is to register to vote”, she puts it. “In the state of Florida, you only have to register to vote one time”, she continues. She explains how to complete the Voter’s Registration Application, which she claims is very easy. Those who have never registered to vote must check the box that says “I’m a new registered voter”.

You also have to be an American citizen and not a felon to be eligible to vote. You also have to select a political party, such as Democrat, Republican, or Independent. Once you complete this application, mail it in with picture ID. You will always be a registered voter in the state of Florida. If you move or change your signature, you have to update your address and your new signature. Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections office at 240 South Military Trail, West Palm Beach, Florida 33415, is the best place to update your information.

You will have your voter registration card within ten business days after submitting it to the Supervisor of Elections office. You do not need your card to vote, but you will need to have a picture ID in order to vote. In any case, you don’t have any picture ID with you, you can still vote with a “Provisional Ballot”. They will give you a ballot to cast your vote, then you will have to place it in a sealed envelope and sign it. The Supervisor of Election office will verify if you’re a registered voter and if you went to your current polling location. They will also make sure you did not vote in any other manner.

Susan Bucher also gives the protocols on Absentee Ballot and Early Voting. Please visit PBCelection.org to get the most updated information about voter information, elections, and Voters Rights and Responsibilities. For walk-in, the office is located at 240 South Military Trail, West Palm Beach, Florida 33415 from 8:30 AM 5:00 or call 561-656-6200.

The Haitian American vote will be a very important vote in both the primary elections on August 30th and the general election on November 7th. We urge every Haitian American who is eligible to vote, to not only register to vote but also go out and vote. The Haitian American Vote counts.
