It was just like yesterday a group of young men, under the direction of manager René Davis, unified to form the boys’ band – Karizma.  It’s hard to believe it’s already been five years. Since then, Karizma has been working relentlessly to find its respective place within the Haitian Music Industry. Last night, the band released the second video: DEBOUCHE of its sophomore album – VIRUS.

Debouche stars one of HMI’s heavyweight promoters, Richard Urbain, playing the role of a gangster. In the beginning scene, Richard is giving out an ultimatum to Karizma’s lead guitarist, JR, to bring back his money within 24 hours or he would have to pick his “own poison”. The video also features several members of the band showing playing their respective instruments.

Many have criticized the young Compas band for biting off the sound of New York City’s most successful Compas band Carimi. Given Carimi is no longer an active band, Karizma can now carry the torch and keep resemble sound alive.

It hasn’t been an easy journey for Karizma, especially in a tough New York market where Carimi was the last band that made it big. In its five years of existence, Karizma has gone through a series of musicians. That has been one of its challenges to find its unique signature sound. Although it has gotten the recognition and the co-sign of many renowned actors in the HMI; however, Karizma has yet to get over the hump.

Karizma has demonstrated great resiliency, especially in a New York market when young bands don’t usually make it to two albums. Karizma is on its second album and seems to show no signs of slowing down.

This video should definitely boost the Karizma’s popularity and help it to become more relevant in other popular Compas cities besides NY.

(HMI BUZZ) – Haiti can’t seem to get a break. If it’s not political storms, it’s natural disaster ripping the heart of the country. As it was predicted over the weekend, the category 4 Hurricane Matthew was going to hit the Western part of Haiti viciously. Around 7 AM this morning, Matthew landed and pounded the region with heavy rain and powerful winds.

According to CNN, Matthew has reportedly killed at least three people and has taken down many houses. The river is overflowed and causing massive flooding. Haiti is expected up to get 40 inches of rain according to the National Hurricane Center. Lots of rains is bad news for Haiti which is already dealing with severe deforestation problems and has very poor infrastructures that cannot sustain dozens inches of rain.

Matthew  is the most powerful hurricane Haiti has seen in almost a decade according to CNN. Prior to hitting Haiti, the catastrophic storm slammed Jamaica and left serious damages and immense floods. Matthew’s next stop is Cuba, the biggest island of the Caribbean. The people of Cuba is already make preparation to welcome Matthew. After its Caribbean tour, it is expected to pay the United States a short visit. It will hit part of Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina. By that time, it is predicted to be a category 3 or 2. “We have to be prepared to be hit by a catastrophic hurricane,” Governor Scott said on Tusday.  He added, “massive destruction we haven’t seen in years.”

The damages caused by Matthew in Haiti are well shared on social media. Devastating images of destroyed homes and  fall down trees are all over Facebook. However, they are some people using false images to create unnecessary fear. Some of those images are from the damages that Matthew did in Jamaica.

Although Matthew has left Haiti, the damages it left behind is paramount and will take months to repair.

When the earth shook Haiti in 2010, I thought that was going to be the worst we would ever have it. Seeing the disheartening images, the collapsed and damaged houses made me feel despondent. I thought it was a wake-up call. I thought to myself, this is a call for us to finally unite. Spiritually, we seemed unified for a little while, as we cried and morn collectively. We felt like those who died were our brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, our children and beloved ones. Every Haitian got a call wherever they were in the world, and realized for that moment how we are one.

Those who did not seem to have gotten a call, however, was the recognized leadership of our beloved country. The majority of the world stood with us and offered a much-needed helping hand. Haiti’s politicians failed us once more. When Rick Sanchez of CNN found President Preval at the Toussaint L’Ouverture airport after in the aftermath of the earthquake and asked him what was the government’s plan, his response was, “my palace collapsed”. In the midst of the biggest natural disaster in the history of the country, the president first and foremost worried about himself. His self-centeredness proved he was not fit to manage the relief funds. But that did not stop him from doing so, as it automatically opened the doors for all NGOs on the planet to come forth and do as they pleased.

No order. No preparation. No accountability. No lessons learnt. As a result, little was done on a sustainable scale.

Now 6 years later, the southwestern region of the country got slammed by a category 4 Hurricane — the most powerful storm to hit the Caribbean in nearly a decade, pounding the Bahamas and flooding parts of Jamaica and Cuba after is torturing of Haiti.

The province of Jérémie, the capital of the southern department of Grande Anse, supposedly got hit the hardest. it’s almost a total destruction. According to CARE Haiti, the storm destroyed 80% of the buildings and wrecked electricity and phone lines. According to the Haitian government, as of October 7, the death toll is about 842. But that number is sure to rise as people deal with the unsanitary and desperate conditions that are now their reality.

Haiti is vulnerable to natural disasters due to many factors, including its fragile infrastructures and its much-advertised chronic deforestation. One can foretell that the worst is yet to come for that side of the island. With the warming of the sphere from all the immature money-making endeavors of the rich worlds, the storms won’t stop churning.

It seems Haiti is a land that attracts disasters. When it’s not a monstrous natural disaster, it’s horrific political one—taking blows after blows. The outside world is entertained by this as the world media projects the most negative images of the country, consistently cursing Haiti as the “poorest country in the Western Hemisphere”. Haitians have been called all kind of names. We, as Haitians, have to look ourselves in the mirror and take ownership of guiding our country towards betterment. We need to expect more from ourselves as it relates to how we engage with the every-day people and ultimately the bozo politicians (wearing suits in a despicably hot climate) line up to plunder in the name of civil servitude.

I think this is the time for us to do for ourselves. Our true friends and neighbors can help, but the responsibility should be ours. It will take compassion to do it though. I’m already thrilled to see so many Haitian non-profit organizations in the diaspora come together for relief efforts. This is a good start. But we also need to brainstorm for long-term, sustainable solutions that need not sophistication to realize.

We can’t continue to let these politicians keep the Haitian people in the abyss of poverty and ignorance while they profit. They’re using the same devise and conquer tactic that the country’s historic enemies have used against its people and thought around the world over to the so-called educated to continue on their behalf. They are the problem. As the Haitian presidential election is only a few days away, let’s make sure our families there vote with their minds not their emotions.

The future starts now. The diaspora needs a vote.

Biography 

Saskya Sky gained her first prominence in the entertainment industry when she entered BlackPlanet.com’s worldwide contest “One Minute to Shine”. Entrants had to post online a one minute video of them singing. The winner would be determined by the website’s visitors. Saskya wowed the audience with her first recorded song ever Touch Me. After all the votes were tallied, Saskya was announced as the first place winner.

Saskya performs locally in South Florida and also travels across the globe to perform. Her viral videos, parodies, songs and spoofs have transformed her into a legitimate and sought after social media comedian and personality. Saskya talents extend to acting as well. Saskya previously performed as a lead actress in the musical stage play “Sounds of Simon” which played at the Studio Theatre in Mizner Park, Boca Raton, FL for 12 weeks in 2014.

Saskya was born and raised in Thomassique, Haiti and began singing at a local church at the age of eight. Saskya’s influences are Celine Dion (for her voice), Fredrick Francois (an iconic French singer, known for his charisma and unique singing style), and Michael Jackson (for his greatness).

Saskya Sky, an American citizen, speaks fluent English and Haitian Creole. She is also highly proficient in French and Spanish. She is a 2014 college graduate and holds a degree in business from Broward College. Actor Jimmy Jean-Louis partners with Haitian American celebrety photographer,  Marc Baptiste to present 2017 Haiti calendar that captures the beauty of Haiti.

New York, NY, November 8, 2016 – Actor and philanthropist Jimmy Jean-Louis announced the release of a limited edition 2017 Haiti Calendar. Launching during the African Diaspora International Film Festival in New York later this month, the calendar features captivating photographs from some of Haiti’smost beautiful sites. The goal of the calendar is to project positive images of Haiti, which has been in portrayed in the media as the “poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere”.

“Haiti is the first nation to have a successful rebellion of enslaved people,” said Jean-Louis. The island was once called ‘La Perle des Antilles’. As an Ambassador-at-Large to Haiti, I want to show the world what that means.”

Jean-Louis has partnered with world renowned celebrity photographer Marc Baptiste, to create these breathtaking images, that will change the conversation and challenge perceptions. In collaboration with the Haiti Minister of Tourism and the Haitian Consulate of New York, Jean-Louis will release the calendars during the African Diaspora International Film Festival in New York, November 25th and 26th, at Columbia University’s Teachers College (Millbank). Jimmy Jean-Louis and Marc Baptiste will be on hand to autograph the calendars.Proceeds will go towards relief efforts in Haiti.

Hier était un triste jour pour notre pays.
Un Sénateur élu de la République a été arrêté ou devrais-je dire qu’il a été kidnappé par la DEA (Drugs Enforcement Administration). Le Sénateur Guy Philippe a été arrêté à son arrivée devant les locaux d’une radio située a PetionVille.
Que Guy Philippe fasse l’objet d’un mandat d’arrêt de la Police Haïtienne et d’un mandat d’arrêt de la DEA, là n’est pas la question.
Mais à la veille de la rentrée Parlementaire prévue pour lundi 9 prochain, on est en droit de se poser des questions sur les conditions de son arrestation et sur sa déportation vers les USA le soir même.
Voilà un homme, recherché par la police Haïtienne et la toute puissante DEA qui malgré ces deux mandats d’arrêt, a reçu la bénédiction du CEP et a mené sa campagne électorale depuis plus de quinze mois dans toute la Grand-Anse sans jamais être inquiéter. On l’a même vu faire campagne aux côtés du Président élu Jovenel Moise a qui il a apporté la victoire de la Grand-Anse (voir photo). On l’a encore vu et entendu, donnant des interviews à la presse locale et internationale lors du passage du cyclone Matthew dans le Grand Sud. On a tous vu des images de Guy Philippe portant secours aux sinistrés de sa ville de Pestel et des environs.
Pourquoi avoir attendu après le résultat des élections pour l’arrêter et le déporter? Pourquoi ce coup d’éclat à la veille de la rentrée Parlementaire? Pourquoi le Cep a-t-il accepté son dossier de candidature? Pourquoi cette arrestation n’a pas été faite avant ou pendant la campagne électorale? Ou avant le résultat des élections! Pourquoi HIER? Le Sénateur Guy Philippe a même reçu son certificat du CEP hier dans la matinée. Ce qui veut dire qu’il était couvert par l’immunité parlementaire.
Quid du mandat d’arrêt national? Ne prévaut-il pas sur le mandat d’arrêt international?
Alors Pourquoi hier? Est-ce un message fort envoyé par les USA au nouveau Président élu et à son futur Gouvernement? Le nettoyage des écuries d’Augias a-t-il commencé? Le prochain sera qui?
Hier soir, on a tous vu la vidéo montrant les images déplorables du Président du Sénat, Ronald Lareche, bousculé et malmené par des agents encagoulés de la PNH, l’empêchant d’accéder dans les locaux ou se trouvaient le Sénateur Guy Philippe. Quel triste spectacle!
On a tous vu des images du puissant Sénateur Youri Latortue arrivant essoufflé à la rescousse de son confrère devant les locaux de la Radio Scoop FM. Mais trop tard. Les carottes étaient déjà cuites pour Guy Philippe.
Nos Poules de Luxe du Senat étaient impuissantes hier devant les cowboys américains qui ont investi l’aéroport international et ont fait monter à bord d’un petit avion affrété spécialement pour le
transport du détenu Guy Philippe, menotté dont le visage avait perdu le sourire qu’il affichait depuis sa victoire aux élections.
Que reste-il de notre dignité ? Depuis 30 ans Haiti est devenue un énième département américain, incapable de vivre sans l’aide étrangère. Sommes-nous devenus un sous-peuple? On vit sous les dicktats des grandes puissances étrangères. Nous sommes devenu les poubelles des USA.
Un traité a été signé entre les USA et le Gouvernement de l’ancien Président Rene Preval pour mettre fin au traffic illicite de drogue. Ce traité accorde tous les droits aux Sheriffs américains.
Mais le Sénateur Guy Philippe a été arrêté et déporte en étant couvert par l’immunité parlementaire. Guy Philippe est-il un citoyen américain? Détient-il un passeport américain? Comme c’est le cas de beaucoup de ceux qui nous gouvernent.
Ce qui est arrivé hier, n’est nullement anodin et mérite réflexion de la part de la classe politique dans son ensemble.
Souvenez vous du Président Noriega qui croupit dans une prison américaine après avoir été arrêté et deporte aux USA.
Nous avons depuis 30 ans, perdu HONNEUR ET RESPECT. J’aimerais vous citer une phrase tirée de notre Acte d’Independance, écrite par Boisrond Tonnerre, Secrétaire de Jean Jacques Dessalines, le 1er Janvier 1804: “Je jure enfin de poursuivre à jamais les traîtres et les ennemis de ton indépendance.”
Messieurs du Gouvernement actuel et Président élu, Honorables du Sénat, le peuple haïtien attends des réponses à toutes ces questions.
Haiti humiliée. Haiti vilipendée.

Many people are calling 2017 their year. They look at it as their year to make that worthwhile impression and achieve their respective  artistic dreams. Apparently, they have been working relentlessly to prepare for the year and make it one to remember. Most artists have New Year resolutions and they look at every new year as an opportunity to do what they didn’t get to do in the previous years. Hence, Bennchoumy starts the new year with Melanie Azibe new single. “It is one of my most self exposed true identity revealed track yet”, stated the prolific MC.

Seeing himself as a new artist is Bennchoumy’s new attitude to go into 2017. “I have over a decade of music and art contribution; my attitude is to come out as a  a NEW artist, with  humble legendary experiences under my belt”, said Bennchoumy. Art doesn’t get old and Bennchoumy music supersedes time; therefore, Creole Hip-hop fans who look for the kind of music he does will have plenty to enjoy if he honors his New Year resolution. “I’m beginning the year with an ‘I have not released anything yet, this is my first project attitude'”, the MC added.

The Melanie Azibe single is available on all: Amazon , iTunes, Tidal , and Distrokid. Bennchoumy  really hopes people enjoy single. He’s gearing up to release several EPs this year, starting with —Living Myth 1.8″, which has the following tracks — Mlanie Azibe, Soufle Van, Kiskeya MC, Banda, in which he features legendary Haitian female songstress, Carole Demesmin.

Jeremie, the southwestern Haiti, where Bennchoumy parents are from, was one of the cities struck by Hurricane Matthew leaving widespread damage and killing hundreds. “I am the son of an Abricots/Abriko birthed Mother – so, that section was hit by the last hurricane Matthew. My goal is to help rebuild it from the ground up, using my music/art as my number one tool”.

We bring you the following article — The Thirst Is Real, written by D.O.C,  highlighting the reality of artists dating fans (HMI Love) in the Haitian Music Industry and how that is becoming problematic.

On the subject of HMI Love, we think of “Everyone Falls In Love Sometimes”, mega hit by Jamaican artists, Tanto Metro and Devonte. I am going out on a limb here – if you have heard the record – you loved it for its simplicity, its dance/club vibe.  Regardless if you could understand the mumbling, seemingly indecipherable lyrics and the Jamaican patois in the verses, yet the hook was clear and comprehensible.

Some entertainers sometimes make us feel like they are directly talking to us through their craft and as fans we fall madly in love with them and build this crush in our heads even though there is no way it will ever manifest itself.  Within our (HMI) community, there is a love (HMI Love) for many of the artists that I believe sometimes can lead to destruction.  There is a line some fans are willing to cross.  A key feature of celebrity culture is that some of the artists’ handlers know how to package and carefully control everything they want to divulge.  Rarely do celebrities in our community acknowledges their wives/girlfriends because they fear it will endanger them due to para-social relationship, one-sided I might add, with their fans.

“Parasocial relationship” ( in our case, HMI Love), is an evolving term coined in the 1950’s that identifies the one-sided relationship between fan and celebrity. The fan puts in all the energy and emotion while the celebrity is unaware of the fan’s existence.

I have been fortunate enough to have met and spent time with many artists.  Knowing your boundaries will go a long way in establishing mutual respect and maintain a working relationship. What I have come to realize is that the Haitian fans treat Haitian artists different than their foreign counterparts.  For example, a young lady who is infatuated with Justin Bieber will not blast him on social media for not having replied to her countless messages, for refusing to acknowledge her dick hungry ways, and for not giving her his contact information.  But when it comes to the Haitian artists, there is a double standard.  They would first ask for a contact number and when the door is shut, they degrade the artist and act as if a crime had been committed.

One thing to note is that while Haitian artists working in the HMI may never amassed the billions of fans like a Justin Bieber, Drake or Ronaldo yet the level of respect must remain the same.  How do you blast someone for not wanting to disclose his or her personal information?  Mind you these are the same people who will openly blast a commoner who slide in her DM/private message requesting personal favors/information.  Why the double standard?  I have witnessed women on social media who would blast a guy for sending them a private message asking for her number yet these are the same women trashing the artists/entertainers for not wanting to give them their private numbers.

There is an illusion that these fans have this personal relationship with the artists because their comment on a post may have been liked by the artist or a reply was furnished in an effort to build momentum on a post.  The blame doesn’t solely lie on these thirsty fans because some artists in the Haitian community will sleep with their fans which in turn propel these fans to blast other artists who doesn’t embrace that lifestyle.  The actions of some of the bad apples lend itself to the creation of the more rabid fans, because they feel a sense of entitlement and cannot control being shut down.

I can guarantee you that if a celebrity is attracted to a fan, he will find a way to get to him/her.  Keep in mind, celebrities do travel with an entourage so he most certainly sends someone to find you and express his desires.  What I hope some people will focus on themselves and stop being thirsty and control your emotions when your thirst isn’t quenched.  Celebrities are people too, and they must be treated with respect.  You would never dare cussed Jay-Z or Drake for not respond to your sexual advances; you would never dare ask Ronaldo to add you to his WhatsAPP, so why act differently when it is a Haitian artist?  Shouldn’t you treat these Haitian artists better because they are our own? Shouldn’t you be the one adding value to that person, but instead you tear him/her down for neglecting your messages and never reply to your post that he/he she may not have seen.  The demands are aplenty when it comes to being an artist and I believe that the fans need to understand that.

You can’t tell an artist I want to be your friend and I want to hang out with you.  That’s thirsty.  People need to turn their thirst and celebrity worship on themselves.  Your relationship with your favorite celebrity is an illusion.  Fans pay to be entertained but that fee does not include a friendship.
